I have never been to Hawaii nor have I tasted Hawaiian cuisines before. But I got immediately hooked after trying it for the first time at this Poke joint located within Soho. Pololi is the first store in Hong Kong to serve Poke, a traditional Hawaiian seafood salad made with raw tuna. If you love sashimi, you will LOVE Poke.

As soon as we stepped into the store, we were greeted by a friendly staff who took the time to walk us through their whole menu upon knowing it was our first visit. Each bowl costs $90 and you can choose either white/brown rice, salad, or both as your base. As for the protein, they offer vegetarian (tofu and edamame) and non-vegetarian (ahi tuna) options. You can choose two flavours from their variety of dressings for the ahi tuna, such as spicy mayo, ginger shoyu, wasabi mayo, or avocado mayo, to name a few. The staff allowed my friend and I to try a sample of every dressing before coming to a decision. Aside from Poke, Pololi also sells the famous Hawaiian Spam Musubi, which I am definitely trying next time!
Their shop are tailored for take-aways so our Poke were prepared on the spot. We ended up with two bowls (Thai style/Avocado mayo; Spicy mayo/Wasabi mayo) and also tried one of their imported beers from Hawaii. I’m not a huge fan of beer due to its bitterness, so I chose a very light pale ale with a fruity undertone called the Big Wave Golden Ale and found it acceptable. The fish was fresh and very well marinated. Not too much to complain about really! My favourite was the Thai Style ahi, as the citrus taste was very refreshing! The spicy mayo and wasabi mayo bowl got mixed together though, so I couldn’t really tell the two apart after awhile. The base to protein ratio was reasonable, as there was enough protein to eat with every bite of rice/salad. But for $90, it might be a bit pricey for lunch as it wasn’t really enough to keep us full for the whole afternoon.
The store was well decorated and very much like how I would have imagine Hawaiian stores to look like. It has really been awhile since I’ve witnessed such good customer service in Hong Kong, so good job Pololi! I can’t wait to see more of these speciality cuisines hit Hong Kong! Ahhh.. I am craving for more Poke as I type this review!!
